How To Write a CV – Part 1

Post

Writing your CV may seem the easiest thing in the world to you, however there are a number of candidates who never get interviewed, because they have made the smallest of mistakes and simply don’t get a call.

To beat the competition for vacancies in Africa we have come up with a helpful seven point plan to make your CV stand out from the crowd. Job vacancies in Africa are limited in number, however we do envisage that the future trends will show an increase in vacancies in Africa with well established employers as well as government funded projects.

So it is important that your application gets seen and you are invited to an interview. Your CV is the carrot that tempts employers to want to know more about you. The interview is where you deliver. To ensure that you are successful when looking at vacancies in Africa you might consider some of the key elements we highlight in our seven point plan for writing a CV.

Personal details are so often out of date and it is often because you are busy or simply forgot that you changed your mobile phone number. You may think that the skills you have now aren’t relevant to that job vacancy in Africa and yet those skills are “transferable skills”. Many of the vacancies in Africa will be looking for a wide range of skills and showing these to be flexible is a good way to get noticed. Here are the first three steps of our guide for you to consider;

  • Personal Details. Ensuring that your full name and title are up to date – if you are female and recently married, ensure your surname has been updated. Your mobile phone number is up to date and your current landline number including the international code.
  • The most valuable references are the most recent ones. The vacancies in Africa that are advertised are looking for up to the minute skills, what your current and at least last two past employers have to say about you are important.
  • Highlighting what your current job entails makes you much more attractive to potential employers. Including all your accomplishments with the company & ensuring you detail all responsibilities that are outside your job description is vital.

Be sure to check out the final four steps in our seven point plan which will be posted to the African Repatriation site   shortly.
